Studio:
Edward Linacre Studio is an Industrial Design and Art practice based in Melbourne, Australia, specialising in the production of light-based artworks and installations, decorative and architectural lighting, furniture, objects and the research and development of circular materials.
Comprising a collective of passionate artists and designers, we are united by a love for light and a desire to create experiences of joy through our work. We seek a deeper connection and understanding of nature, in order to operate within its framework, and emulate the closed-loop systems of production on which it thrives.
The studio designs and manufactures a range of internationally award-winning lighting products and objects, undertakes commissions for standalone artworks and installations, and produces Edward’s signature sculptural and conceptual works. As a consultancy, we develop circular alternatives to linear material systems for clients across diverse industries—including recycled paper, recycled plastics, and mycelium-based biomaterials—creating products, installations, and artworks that celebrate the enduring beauty of these materials and the processes behind their growth or transformation.
The studio’s works are proudly Australian made, supporting local manufacturing and operating under the design principles of a circular economy. Lasting partnerships are maintained with master craftspeople and fabricators to ensure outcomes of the highest quality, innovation, environmental responsibility and wonder.
We acknowledge and pay respect to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation who are the Traditional Custodians of the Land upon which we operate.
Edward Linacre:
Edward Linacre is an Australian Industrial Designer, Artist, and Circular Material Alchemist. His overarching philosophy explores the relationship between humanity, nature and the cosmos, reflecting on the ways our species influences and alters these interconnected systems.
You’ll find Edward running toward the purple haze of dusk, seemingly entranced in a ritual of ancient sun deity worship - or annoyingly changing over the lightbulbs in your house. Light is integral to his way of life and to his art. He experiments, bends, contorts, diffuses, and reflects it in pursuit of an unseen spectrum, an unparalleled visionary journey, an escape of transcendence, and is driven to awaken in his audience that same profound experience that ignites his soul.
He uses light to elevate and enliven another foundational element to his work: the geometry, mathematics and algorithms that underpin the structures and systems of the universe. The same microscopic patterns found in the ovaries of angelfish also govern the formation of galaxies, and have long influenced religious symbolism, mysticism and architecture. Through his sculptural works, Edward seeks to cultivate a deeper reverence for nature’s inherent knowledge and design.
Investigations into natural systems reveal the environmental cost of human progress. Inspired by his grandfather, who began recycling plastics in the 1970s, he carries forward this legacy—fueling a philosophy and deep obsession with developing alternatives to waste materials. Once labelled a “concerning hoarder of hard rubbish,” he now collaborates with designers, architects, plastic engineers and mycologists on architectural and artistic commissions, recycled plastic products and mycelium-based furniture, aimed at creating commercially viable alternatives to single-use, linear production materials. His artworks celebrate these materials’ inherent beauty, challenging lingering biases and elevating their value.
Edward’s work has been acquired and commissioned by notable galleries and private collectors, and has been shown in major international exhibitions including Salone del Mobile, Dubai Design Week, Melbourne Design Week, Designer Days Paris, 100% Design London, and ARCHITECT@WORK across Europe, with recent commissions by the National Gallery of Victoria, the Australian Government, Louis Vuitton (in collaboration with Danielle Brustman), and The Collectional Gallery, Dubai, UAE.
Edward passionately supports the creative industries through educational institutions and the co-working hub / creative platform Mycelium Studios, which he co-founded in 2013, whilst managing the industry partnership between Mycelium Studios and RMIT, and sitting on the RMIT Master of Design Innovation and Technology (MDIT) Industry Advisory Committee (IAC).
Edward’s accolades include co-authoring eight international patents for medical device designs, winning the global James Dyson Award, the international LAMP Award, the International LIT Awards, the Australian Interior Design Excellence Award, and receiving the DIA Designers Australia Awards – President's Medal for his contribution to the creative industries.
